“He was a master with a smile: it made you feel like you’re just you, the center of his attention.

With anyone, and especially with the orchestra: it was almost impossible to subtract him – after the concert – to the rite of staying with his musicians. But if I can draw on my own memories, I choose this: he had a house in Engadine, Val Fex, a place where you can not go by car, a sublime beauty, wisely protected. He said, “I get up in the morning and I want to give the cows down there under the windows, with their bells.”
